Summary

TCAN are
looking for enthusiastic, pro-active individuals to join the Board of TCAN. We
are particularly interested in recruiting people who have experience of
fundraising or business development.

We arrange various events throughout
the year, including the Winter Festival and Christmas Light’s switch on.
Recently, we have organised ‘hustings’ for elections and an evening with the leader
of the opposition at the Scottish Parliament.

We are a community organisation and
strive to improve the lives of people living and working in Tollcross. To those
ends, we are working hard to open our Community Hub on a more regular basis,
with access to a Citizens Advice Bureau adviser, as part of our service.

If you join our board, you will have
the opportunity to be part of an exciting and growing organisation, with an
ability to influence and shape our future direction, to the betterment of the people
of Tollcross.

DUTIES
& RESPONSIBILITIES

The
duties of a TCAN trustee are:

· To ensure that the organisation complies with
its governing document, organisation law, and any other relevant legislation or
regulations.

·
To ensure that the organisation pursues its
objectives as defined in its governing document

·
To ensure the organisation applies its
resources exclusively in pursuance of its objectives, i.e. the organisation
must not spend money on activities which are not included in its own
objectives, no matter how worthwhile or charitable those activities are

·
To contribute actively to the board of
trustees’ role in giving firm strategic direction to the organisation, setting
overall policy, defining goals, setting targets and evaluating performance
against agreed targets

·
To safeguard the good name and values of the
organisation

·
To represent the company at functions and
meetings as appropriate

·
To declare any conflict of interest while
carrying out the duties of a trustee

·
To be collectively responsible for the actions
of the organisation and other trustees

·
To ensure the effective and efficient
administration of the organisation

·
To abide by the equal opportunities policy

·
To ensure the financial stability of the
organisation

·
To protect and manage the property of the
organisation and to ensure the proper investment of the organisation’s funds

·
To make sure the organisation is properly
insured against all reasonable liabilities

·
To appoint and support the employees and
monitor their performance

In addition to the above statutory
duties of all trustees, each trustee should use any specific knowledge or
experience they have to help the board of trustees reach sound decisions.

This will involve scrutinising board
papers, leading discussions, focusing on key issues, and providing advice and
guidance requested by the board on new initiatives, or other issues relevant to
the area of, the organisation’s work in which the trustee has special
expertise:

to attend meetings, and to read papers in
advance of meetings

·
to attend sub-committee meetings as
appropriate

·
to participate in other tasks as arise from
time to time, such as interviewing new staff/volunteers, helping with
fundraising

·
to keep informed about the activities of the
organisation and wider issues which affect its work

BOARD
MEMBER (TRUSTEE) SPECIFICIATION

Each
trustee must have:

·
integrity

·
a commitment to the organisation and its
objectives

·
an understanding and acceptance of the legal
duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship

·
a willingness to devote the necessary time and
effort to their duties as a trustee

·
strategic vision

·
good, independent judgment

·
an ability to think creatively

·
willingness to speak their mind

·
an ability to work effectively as a member of
a team

The
board of Trustees are looking for a range of skills and experience, including,
but not limited to, the following areas:

·
setting targets, monitoring and evaluating
performance and programmes in commercial and non-profit organisations

·
financial management and fundraising

·
marketing and communications

·
campaigning

·
education and learning

The Trustee board seeks to maintain a
membership that has a wide-ranging level of experience so that the Board as a
whole has the skills and experience to draw upon in its governance and decision
making roles. At your first meeting, you will be given the contact details of
the other trustees in order that you may contact them independently. You will
also be able to gain an insight into the specific skills and experience
individual members have so that you can seek guidance from individual members
if required.

that this is a ‘volunteer’ position and not a paid role.



Vacancy: Community Hub Volunteers

In response to the needs of local people, TCAN is in the process of opening a community information and advice hub in Tollcross. Working with Citizen’s Advice Edinburgh and a local foodbank we are going to be opening the Hub from Spring 2017 on Thursday mornings 10am-12pm at the shop in Central Halls Tollcross. People will be able to access to a Citizens Advice Bureau adviser, as part of our service.

We are currently recruiting volunteers to welcome people using the service. If you join want to be part of an exciting and growing organisation, with an ability to influence and shape our future direction, to the betterment of the people of Tollcross, then volunteer today.

Community Hub Volunteer: what is the the role?

• To welcome people to the Community Hub and sign post them to relevant services

• To act as an ambassador for TCAN

• To help identify local residents who may benefit from our services

• Keep up to date a library of local services, that may benefit visitors to the Hub

• Ensure the effective and efficient administration of the Hub

• Help shape TCAN services, by providing feedback to the Board from users of the Hub

What we are looking for?
• Good communication skills and ability to empathise with our clients and build trust with them is essential
•Excellent people skills and ability to be friendly and wellcoming to service users
• People who will respect the confidentiality of people visiting the service

• Knowledge of the local area would be helpful

How many hours do I need to volunteer?
• Someone who would be able to commit to volunteering at least one Thursday morning (10am-12pm) a month for a period of at least 6 months and attend relevant training sessions.

Whilst the role is predominantly volunteering at the Community Hub on Thursday morning’s, you will have the opportunity, if you would like, to volunteer in our wider activities, gaining experience in events management, communications and fundraising.

Vacancy: Comms and Social Media volunteer

We have an exciting volunteering opportunity helping us develop our communications as we prepare to open
a new community advice service in Tollcross. The role will work with TCAN
volunteers and our partner organisations to promote our work, speak out about
issues affecting local people and grow our membership base.

What could I be doing?
This is a list of possible activities. We
are open to hearing from people who can help us with one or all of the tasks
below.

*Writing content
for the TCAN website including: interviews with local projects, news articles and
blogs about issues affecting people in Tollcross
*Managing our social media accounts
*Helping
coordinate promotional materials to advertise the work of TCAN
*Sending out the monthly TCAN e-newsletter
*Regularly
checking the TCAN email account

What experience do I need?
*Good written and oral communication skills are essential.
*Some experience of preparing promotional materials and updating
website content would be useful
*You will be a creative person with an interest in social media
and lots of ideas about how we could grow our communications
*Interest and enthusiasm for the aims of TCAN are very important.
*Patience and ability to be work in a small team

What’s in
it for me?

You will be part of a rapidly moving project which has the potential
to deliver positive outcomes for people living and working in Tollcross. This
role will have a lot of autonomy and you will have opportunities to put your
own creative stamp on projects. If you are looking to build your CV this is the
perfect role

How many hours do I need to volunteer?
Hours might vary but we would expect on average you will be volunteering
about 2 hours a week. We also have a monthly committee minute meeting which we
would like you to attend occasionally.
However, if you have less time available or there are just parts of the role
which interest you please do get in touch.

Ideally we are looking for somebody who will be able to volunteer for
at least 6 months

TCAN launches new volunteer drive

It’s the beginning of April and spring is definitely on the way. Finally the days are getting longer and we can all start to enjoy being out and about in our wonderful city. Here at TCAN, April is the beginning of our 2017 drive to find more volunteers keen to get involved in their local community.
